Detox: Trendy or True?

Detox, Cleanse, Elimination Diet......

Whatever you call it, it’s January, so it’s everywhere… websites, newsletters, magazines, your fave social media channel, your inbox or anywhere you go, “Detox Your Way into the New Year”. As a 5 year veteran of Detoxing, there are many ways to look at this topic. So let’s break it down….

Are you Toxic?

Not only are you not toxic, but your body has a perfect and sophisticated way of eliminating toxins that involves the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs. However, we tend to load our bodies with substances that shift these organ’s priorities from processing your kale salad to processing all the wine you drink in the evening. Or the processed foods that are so easy to grab and we are often tricked into thinking is “healthy”, like granola bars, gluten free packaged snacks, etc.

So, while your organs are doing a great job of processing everything we give them, “detoxing”, through eating meals that eliminate these culprits, can give you system a break from overworking. And in the process, you can find relief from some of these typical signs that your body needs it.

Signs your Body Needs a Break

• Inflammation

• Low Energy

• Bloating

• Difficulty Sleeping

• Falling Asleep then Waking Up

• Weight Gain

• Skin Breakouts

• Constipation

• Mood Swings

• Cravings

• Riding Highs and Lows of Hunger through the day

A typical detox gives your body a break from:

• Gluten

• Dairy

• Soy

• Corn

• Refined Sugar

• Meat

• Alcohol

• Caffeine

What does a Detox really look like?

A typical re-set detox last 5 days- 2 weeks. There are longer ones for sure but when you are looking to restart, this is a good time frame to start with. You are eating breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack option if you need it.

I have found that a good detox does not only last the prescribed 5, 7, 10 ,etc. days, but it has a ripple effect that goes through the entire season you are in. So, if you start a detox the second week in January, you will have leftovers and favorite recipes to take you through the winter, until February or March. We typically cycle through a similar set of meals (think Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday, Leftover Night, etc,) so this sets you up for a cycle to repeat your favorite dishes from your detox, setting up a healthier cycle.

In the end, you may uncover something that you are sensitive to, such as gluten or dairy. And because you are eating clean, unprocessed food, you are likely to lose the inflammation, the weight, and feel a little lighter during the day, while sleeping a little better at night.

Off the Plate

The basis of detoxing is the food, we all think. But when you are not having dessert, or wine with dinner, or coffee first thing in the morning, you may have the tendency to sip a cup of tea, and head to bed a little earlier than usual. The inward focus during your detox is one of the most powerful parts of it. You are freed from figuring out “what to eat” at each meal, which, in and of itself, can be draining. It’s all in the plan, and you already bought all the groceries you need for it.

Where can you get one of these detoxes?
